Larry Zilinsky’s Coupe ....  British Columbia, Canada

This ’32 Ford 5-window coupe was built as the result of Larry Zilinsky of Victoria BC not being able to buy back his original first car , another 32 Ford 5-window coupe – that and the fact that his lady, “Root”, doesn’t particularly like traveling great distances in their other hot rod, a ’32 Ford roadster, and Larry likes to drive his cars to far away places! But then again who needs a reason to build another hot rod – you just do it!
The car is based on a glass body from New Age Motorsports in Connecticut, and has the options needed to make it as close to the original car as possible, ie cowl vent, flip out windshield, and roll down back window. NAM are also the only people doing a 5-window body complete with very original drip rails, and coupes have to have drip rails! The paint and bodywork was all done by Ed Watson in Victoria, and Ed painted the car in a special “one off” color of blue/grey that Larry picked out from color chips after not being able to decide to paint the car blue or grey. The upholstery was done by Fred McMillan, also in Victoria, in white “fake leather” with black piping and black loop carpet. Also featured in the interior are an ididit column with a ’40 Ford wheel, SW wings gauges in a finned aluminum insert, a Glide seat, and a Ron Francis wiring kit. The 383 cu in SBC “stroker”engine was built by Fred McMurray after Fred built the very strong and reliable SBC for Larry’s roadster. When you’re impressed with one engine it’s only logical to get the next one done by the same guy, right?! Behind the engine is a 700R4 trans built, and tweaked, by Neil at Gears Transmissions that passes the power to a 78 maverick 8” rear end sporting 3:55 gears.

Other notable features on the car are the Offenhouser breather licence plate light, the wide whites from Diamond Back Classics, and the great old time striping done by George Apted. The chassis was accomplished using a set of ’32 rails from Hot Rods n Horsepower and the rest of the chassis and suspension pieces supplied by Pete and Jakes via Rjay’s Hot Rod parts in Cuba Missouri. (Thanks again Rjay!) Once all the pieces were ready to be thrown together to form a chassis the welding and fabricating talents of Jim McGowan were called upon and between Jim and Larry the chassis was built. The suspension is very simple and traditional – buggy spring in back with ladder bars and 4” I-beam axle out front with hairpins and a monoleaf spring and Vega steering. For wheels and tires Larry chose the same proven combination he used on the roadster – 255-70x15’s and 195-70x14’s mounted on 15x8 and 14x6 red solids. Larry’s original ’32 coupe, which he owned from 1961 -63 when he lived in Burnaby BC, is now owned by Dave Pollen in Cloverdale and as understanding as Dave was to Larry wanting to buy his first car back, he couldn’t bring himself to sell it. Overall Larry figures that’s just as well, because he’s built this one exactly as he wants it to be now, and besides, when he’s driving down the road looking out through the 3” chopped windshield the world looks pretty much the same as it did 42 years ago, at least in his mind! Hey, when you’re going down the road on an adventure in a chopped ’32 Ford coupe with nothing but the sounds of those Flowmasters in your ears (there’s NO “stereo” in the car!) the world’s problems kinda fade! Ahhhhh, life’s okay!
